'Happy Feet Two' An IMAX 3D Experience

A Review by Tracy Cameron
Staff Writer

It has been a while since I have been to an IMAX film, and those were usually nature presentations at tourist attractions, so I was excited to experience a current film in IMAX. I brought my two children, ages 10 and 12, for a family outing to the city. My daughter loved the first movie and was eagerly looking forward to the second one. My son was excited about seeing an IMAX movie. Happy Feet Two is directed by George Miller and produced by George Miller, Doug Mitchell, and Bill Miller, and is a feel good, animated movie, with upbeat lyrics. Robin Williams returns to again play a dual role as Ramon and Lovelace. I watched Happy Feet again so that I could familiarize myself with the characters before going to see the second installment which came out five years later.

Happy Feet Two takes places in Emperor Land. The penguins in Emperor Land now sing and dance. Mumble (Elijah Wood), now called the Master of Tap is with Gloria (Pink), and they have a son, Erik. Erik doesn’t know where he belongs so he runs away, just like his father when he was younger. He meets the Might Sven (Hank Azaria), a penguin (actually a puffin bird) who can fly.

Mumble goes looking for his son to bring him home. While Mumble and Erik are gone, the ice breaks and traps the Emperor Land penguins. Mumble, Ramon, Erik, and Erik’s two friends that ran away with him aren’t trapped. Mumble gathers the penguin Amigos and all their family, Mighty Sven, and others to help free the Emperor penguins. This allows Erik to see his father as a hero, and helps Erik to believe in himself. Make sure you allow enough time for travel and parking. We parked in the Esquire Plaza parking lot next to the theatre for convenience, but the Capital Lot on L and 10th Street has free parking. You just need to get your parking ticket validated in the theatre, which we had no problems doing.

None of us were disappointed with the experience. My son was impressed with the details of the IMAX theatre that were listed onscreen before the movie started, and also that you could order different types of coffee in the concession booth. My daughter loved the movie and described it as "awesome". The IMAX movie made us feel like we were right there as the ice was breaking and pieces were flying in the air, and you also wanted to pop the "bubbles" at the end of the movie. See Happy Feet Two at the Esquire IMAX Theatre, 1211 K Street, Sacramento, CA. For ticket info, call (916)446-2333x203 or visit www.IMAX.com for a complete schedule or to pre-order tickets.
