Magique! at the Reno Eldorado A Review by Kevin Reeves Staff Writer
When a clan of sultry spider-women suddenly cast their webbing onto you and your friends, physically binding you to your seats, you feel it course through your body. There’s no escape, and you love it. You know: it’s that feeling you get witnessing someone jump through a spinning, bladed deathtrap. It hits you when a perfect stranger introduces himself by telling you the demographics of your hometown, before you even mention the city’s name. Courtesy photo: Razzle Dazzle pyrotechnics
Still don’t understand? Well, think of the emotional state overwhelming you when a grinning seductress dismembers herself before your eyes, and then reassembles her body unharmed, before a dog runs out to chat you up in perfect English. It’s watching people transform, vanish, reappear, levitate, fly over your head, and then teleport giant objects out of thin air. It’s that bewildering blend of reverence, thrill, intrigue and inspiration pumping through you by a quickened heartbeat and unstoppable smile. It triggers uncontrollable gasps, laughter, randy curiosity, a bit of fear and a ton of awe. It’s magic. Or as the Reno Nevada’s Eldorado dubs it, “Magique!” starring Kevin and Lord Caruso, artfully deceiving lucky audiences with sparkling eroticism, now through April 14th.
A more practical appreciation is inspired when you realize all of the elaborate, mature, fantastical and stylish costumes were designed and hand-made by co-magician Lord Caruso himself (!) Normally I wouldn’t get into a show’s outfits too much, amidst all of the pyrotechnics and illusory razzle dazzle; but you have to see (to believe!) these futuristic techno-punk horse Mohawk head dresses, Zatanna-worthy fishnet leggings, spike-studded sleeves and shoulder pads, sci-fi Tron-like visors, man-skewering light sabers, and sexy mirror-ball body suits (the latter-most of which is worn by the dashing designer himself). As equally magical (if not a bit more subtle) as the fashions and phantasms themselves, are the modernly evocative musical choices and break-neck pacing. Before you can stop to appreciate the hot track to which professionally-choreographed beauties whirl and twirl, the next death-defying production has already started unveiling itself on-stage. You can’t catch your breath, or ponder “How did they do that?!” because you’re already wrapped up in the coyly smiling Kevin’s next feat, with the animated Lord Caruso bouncing across the stage to assist. “I have the worst attention [span],” Kevin told me after his epic show, “so [good pacing] is the first thing I think of. We’re competing [for the public’s attention] with YouTube &30-second clips. It takes strategy to keep people in their seats, even for an hour.” No wonder Kevin and Caruso’s stunning showgirls decided to literally enmesh us in their tangled webbing! But they didn’t really need to do that to keep us there: the stage spectacles themselves had already glued our bodies to the showroom’s comfortable seats. “It’s a labor of love for us,” Kevin explained. “Many people have a static image of what magic is...[but] what we do is NOT what people expect.”
That’s an understatement. From the pre-show array of diverse, historical magic show posters speaking of bygone eras’ magic acts both domestic and abroad, to the mold-breaking production and scintillating acrobatic dances, to guest comedian Mark Kornhauser’s mind-reading antics and Zsa Zsa the dog’s articulate ventriloquism: this show transmutes beyond all expectations and makes us itch for more. It would be great to time-travel back across the last 20 years and watch all of Kevin and Caruso’s various productions, or enjoy any of the six theatrical shows they continue to coordinate with their colleagues on Carnival cruise ships around the world...but what a treat to merely skip across the Sierra Mountains and experience the magic just a stone’s throw from Northern California, at the always satisfying Reno Eldorado hotel and casino showroom! Check it out while you can, before it disappears in its next fiery explosion and plume of smoke. You won’t be disappointed.
