Sierra Mountain Train Travel
A Travel Piece by Kevin Reeves

Seasons broke pattern in the Sierra Mountains between Sacramento and Reno, contrasting before the eyes of Amtrak California Zephyr train passengers traveling the route in December 2011. It was hard to imagine the desperate struggles and faith-testing challenges of settlers long past, traversing the ominous Donner Pass. Icy white-out? On the contrary – there was little snow to be seen at all, earlier this winter.

Tim Dunn (L) and Ken Kiunke (right, seated) at the 2010 Bottling Party at
Bianchini Vineyards in Shingle Springs, CA.

Tim Dunn is one of a crew of volunteers who each year gather to harvest vintage grapes and bottle
the bounty at Bianchini's vineyard in Shingle Springs, just as many others
do at private vineyards throughout the gold country. Many wineries will be finishing up
their bottling of 2009 vintage wines as well. In late September 2011, the
Bianchini's 2009 vintage will be bottled, tanks emptied, equipment cleaned and serviced
in preparation for this year's crush. It will be celebrated with a dinner and lots of wine.
At Frog’s Tooth, Gary and Sue are harvesting their Grenache and Petite Sirah.

Hovey Tempranillo Awarded gold
Murphys, CA – When winemaker Chuck Hovey was asked to be a judge at the renowned Tempranillo al Mundo
international wine competition, he felt it was one of his highest honors. Little did he know that when
the results were announced in New York on November 16 that his own label,
2009 Hovey Tempranillo, Rolleri Cuvee, would win a gold medal, only one of two
awarded to a winery in the United States.
