Six Flags Discovery Kingdom's SkyScreamer By Ian Tipton Guest Writer
The SkyScreamer is the newest ride at Six Flags: Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, CA. I visited to check it out with three friends on the first sunny day in a week of rain. Visible way before we arrived at the park, the ride is similar to a giant swing. The rider is strapped in and slowly moved 150 feet in the air, which is the same height as the park's largest rollercoaster Medusa. This swing seats two people per chair and holds a total of thirty riders at a time. The ride lasts a little under two minutes and will allow the rider to enjoy a forty-three mile per hour experience while the swing rotates in a ninety-eight foot circular path. The height of this ride gives its passengers a bird’s eye view of the park by day and at night the entire thing lights up and can be seen from anywhere in the park.
The height restrictions are forty-eight inches and up, so it is a ride that can be enjoyed by anyone from child to adult. The serenity of the ride and overall height are the perfect combination for those who want a small rush but prefer to avoid the intensity of a rollercoaster. It is fun for children and even gives out prizes to kids that ride it. This ride incorporates height and speed to entertain people of any age. While it is high, the fear factor is not overwhelming as I watched children go on it over and over again. Relatively slow when compared to the park's other attractions, I would say this is a kid's ride, but can be enjoyed by others as well. Riders are seated in plastic chairs and have a safety belt across their waist as well as a metal bar in their lap, so there is a sense of safety along with the weightlessness of actual flight. I recommend any park attendee try out this new ride, the SkyScreamer.
Once a person has taken ten rides on the SkyScreamer they “earn their wings” and receive a SkyScreamer pin. It is a fun way the park has decided to use in order to have more people try out the new ride. Overall, the SkyScreamer is good for children and adults who do not like fast-paced rides and has already become a much-loved addition to the park. Visit the park soon, America's only combined marine life, wildlife and wild rides theme park, for great summertime family fun.
