History of Sacramento
revealed
By Eva Dunn
In
over 200 vintage photographs and postcards, local author Tom Myers
shares the history of Sacramento. In 1850 Sacramento was a city of
10,000 men with almost no women or children, a transient population
going to and from the gold mines in the Sierra Nevada. The
waterfront on the Sacramento River was a chaotic scene of oxen and
mule teams, piles of supplies on the wharf and abandoned ships
whose crews had jumped ship for the gold fields. The city also
became a major railroad junction and agricultural hub in the 1800s
before it became the center of state government and much of the
bustling city’s early life was captured on picture postcards.
Sacramento
photographer Tom Myers, a collector of vintage postcards, presents
California’s capital city as it used to be, complete with
railroads, farming, a busy downtown, government buildings,
riverboats, public baths, the early Yolo Causeway and even an
ostrich farm or two. Myers culled these views from his extensive
collection of postcards and modern images, many of which appear in
current postcards of Northern Calif. Available at area bookstores,
independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia

'Sacramento Impressions'
captures more than photos
By Eva Dunn
This beautiful, nostalgic book of color
photographs captures more than an amazing collection of Sacramento
land-marks, culture and
events; it captures its inner essence in each
snap of the shutter; it captures the spirit of the people whose
images grace its pages, events and cultures that have made
Sacramento the city it is today. With stunning shots, captured with
an artist's eye, presented in exquisite, full-color photographs,
Sacramento Impressions features 122 images that represent a
photographic thumbprint of Sacramento, capturing its many nuances.
Tom, and Sally Myer's 40-year photography career has been a joy and
labor of love; their expertise over the years centered on images in
California and the West.
Tom and Sally have been
quality stock photography professionals for over thirty-five years,
along with son, Jeff Myers. Their work has been published by
hundreds of magazines, and featured in well-known publications like
National Geographic, Newsweek, National Wildlife Magazine, on
Hallmark cards, and in countless advertisements worldwide.
The Myers specialize in
high quality stock
images of California, the Pacific Coast, Gold
Country, Sierra, Nevada, and cities like Sacramento, San Francisco
and New York. Subjects include Agriculture, Ecology, Wildlife,
Industry, Energy and the Environment. One of the Myers'
distinctions is their personalized service. They will assist you in
making a selection from their library of over 500,000 professional
stock photographs. The Myers have shot digital for the last five
years but still shoot film for one of a kind subjects.
Jeff, their son, joined
the photography team when Tom and Sally bought him a plastic camera
with a fake lens scotch taped on, around the age of two. Jeff's
work has been published by National Geographic, National Wildlife,
various books and advertisements worldwide - too many to list. The
Myers are as delightful and colorful as their photography. There is
joy and laughter in their eyes, especially Tom's twinkling blue
eyes. They love what they do, they love people, and they love
sharing the beauty of their photographs. Tom is shown in the small,
inset photo to the left, above, showing a friend one of his special
shots in the book. They are all thrilled with the release of this
book of memorable photographs.
In September 2007, a Launch
Party and Book Signing was held at The Shack Restaurant, located at
5201 Folsom Blvd., Sacramento, owned by friends Gary Slaeppy and
his wife, Jen. When I asked Tom Myers why not hold the event at a
bookstore or coffee shop, he replied, "We didn't just want a book signing, we wanted a party!" We
were all treated
to great food along with a wine tasting. With the
restaurant full, the party flowed onto the patio and around the
side of The Shack; people gathered at tables under brick-red umbrellas in
the warmth of late afternoon, laughing and talking, with purchased copies of
Sacramento Impressions sitting on their tables. Everyone was having
a great time, and enjoying the release of a very special book.
Sacramento Impressions has
stunning photographs of a plum orchard in full bloom, the ground
below golden with flowers; fisherman on the river, silhouetted
against the setting sun; mine shafts in Grass Valley; magnificent
photos of wildlife; and an awesome shot of the Tower Bridge at
night, lighting up the river. These are among some of the
spectacular photographs you will enjoy. This book is a keep-sake.

Impressions has a personal 'Forward' by former Sacramento Mayor Heather
Fargo who also attended the Launch Party and Book Signing. She
wrote that "...only the Myers could, in a photograph, capture all
of the qualities that characterize daily life in Sacramento today".
Published by Farcountry Press, copies from the first
printing sold so quickly that a second printing wa planned. The
