IRON MAN 3 in 3D
A Review by Eva Dunn
Highly anticipated and long awaited, Iron Man 3 does not disappoint! The continuing story of the American superhero featuring the Marvel Comics character Iron Man, sequel to Iron Man and Iron Man 2, this is the 7th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Director Shane Black was hired to rewrite and direct the film. We saw this movie at the Esquire IMAX, the perfect venue for this dynamic film.
When Tony Stark's home is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution. Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as the charismatic Tony Stark, as does Gwyneth Paltrow as his love interest and associate, Pepper Potts; and Don Cheadle as his partner, Colonel James Rhodes. Guy Pearce makes his first appearance in the Iron Man movie as does Ben Kingsley. Courtesy Photo
In this sequel, Tony is experiencing panic attacks because of his near-death experience in The Avengers and is unable to resolve them; he becomes restless and barely sleeps. In his waking hours he has built several Iron Man suits which Pepper is not very happy about. It almost becomes a love triangle, Tony, Pepper and the Suits. The dynamics of the suits appear more sophisticated than previous versions and his entire workshop reflects his obsession with technology.
3D lent so much realism to the movie scenes I can't imagine them being as effective without it. It was thrilling. From the moment the movie began, the whole audience just settled in for an amazing ride! This was going to be awesome. The premise of the movie begins with flashbacks to 1999 at a New Year's Eve party with a female scientist and other characters which demonstrate the kind of brash and uncaring person Tony Stark had been then. A string of bombings by the terror-ist Mandarin has thrown the world into chaos and Tony Stark delivers a televised threat, arrogantly giving out his home address publicly. Stark's home is then destroyed with helicopter gun ships.
The destruction is a work of art, slow motion in 3D with the entire structure demolished. I must say I really dislike it when homes are destroyed but the magnitude of the destruction and the way it is captured on film was so awesome I couldn't stop watching. Amazingly, everyone survives this horrific attack. Tony's artificial intelligence JARVIS saves him although he ends up in Tennessee. As he has an experimental armor that is not operating, he cannot return to California and the world believes him dead. Courtesy Photo
With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts; it's like back to basics without the gad-gets with his suit out of com-mission. Non-stop action ensues with Tony hunting down the terrorist plot, the Mandarin who is killing veterans by internal explosions; thrills and death defying antics throughout. What an amazing storyline, and no I am not giving too much away; it is an incredible movie. New characters are introduced as are previous ones; exciting and fun too, especially young Ty Simpkins as Harley. He is the first child featured prominently in the Iron Man films. Harley is a troubled boy living with his mother, who must work all hours since his father left them years earlier.
After Stark arrives in town, Harley becomes his sidekick of sorts and helps to repair his suit and track down the Mandarin. He is a delightful addition
and adds to the humorous parts in the story. Witty, charming, a movie with heart, and impressive action sequences, with slick, flashy visual effects makes this a movie you must see. Plus there are several surprises you won't expect. 'Iron Man 3' is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures and DMG Entertainment.
