EDMT’s Seussical The Musical
A Review by Tracy Cameron

El Dorado Musical Theatre’s Seussical The Musical runs November 2-18, 2012 at Three Stages Performing Arts Center at Folsom Lake College in Folsom, and features child performers ages 6-14. I read Dr. Seuss books to my children when they were little, and later they read them to me. They are wonderful for teaching rhyming and reading nonsense words. I recognized character and stories in the musical from when I read them to my children, but I am going to have to re-read some of these books to refresh my memory on the characters I fell in love while watching the musical. The musical is a compilation of Dr. Seuss books including: Cat in the Hat; Horton Hears a Who!; Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories; Horton Hatches the Egg; I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew; Green Eggs and Ham; McElligot’s Pool; If I Ran the Circus; Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?; One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish; How The Grinch Stole Christmas; Hunches in Bunches; The Butter Battle Book; Oh, The Thinks You Can Think!; and The Sneeches and Other Stories. Characters include: Cat in the Hat (Andrew Wilson); Horton the Elephant (David Bryant); Jojo (Russell Anderson); Gertrude McFuzz (Carly Speno); Mayzie LaBird (Anjie Rose Wilson); Sour Kangaroo (Micah Long); The Mayor of Whoville (Owen Whetstone); General Genghis Khan Schmitz (CJ Knoble); The Wickersham Brothers; The Grinch (Asten Fallavollita); Hunters, Hunches; Vlad Vladikoff; Thing One (Emily Fritz) and Thing Two (Justine Majewski); Yertle the Turtle (Annie Kessler); and Cindy Lou Who (Natalie Roeschen).
Seussical first debuted in 2000. Most of the Seussical script is verbatim from Dr. Seuss’s books. Music is by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynne Ahrens, and the book by both Stephen Flaherty and Lynne Ahrens. The story reminds us to accept others who are unusual or different.
The Cat in the Hat acts as host and Master of Ceremonies, outside observer, narrator, and devil’s advocate. He leads the audience to Who-ville, the jungle, the circus, and other scenes from Dr. Seuss stories. He tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that the people of Who-ville live on, including Jojo. JoJo is a Who child sent off to a butter battling military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton is determined to protect the people of Who-ville. Horton also cares for Mayzie LaBird's egg after she leaves and doesn’t return. His protection of the people of Who-ville and care of Mayzie LaBird’s egg has the animal kingdom making fun of him, except for Gertrude McFuzz, who longs for his attention, and JoJo, whose "thinks" save them all in the end. Dr. Seuss books show that doing what is right, looking out for both our world and other people, standing up for what we believe, and thinking for ourselves, are always the best choices. It was wonderful to see so many youth performing. There was never a missed step when the ensemble was performing. Andrew Wilson does an excellent job as Cat in the Hat. This musical is for all ages. I especially liked the musical numbers where the entire company performed, including “The Circus McGurkus”. We attended opening night. The musical was well received by everyone, and we were surrounded by friends and family of the cast. We would recommend this musical to friends and encourage them to go see it. We drove from Grass Valley and it is worth the drive. Photo: Gertrude McFuzz, Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant (Carly Speno [Ham Cast], Andrew Wilson [both casts] and David Bryant [Ham Cast])
