Every man, woman, and child that has grown up in the Sacramento Valley knows that when summer comes around, the California State Fair is right around the corner. The fair serves as a place of discovery, adventure, and fun for all ages. The attractions it provides are enough to make any summer night memorable and full of joy. Photo courtesy CA State Fair
It is easy to ensure that a younger child has a great experience while at the fair, but their moody older siblings may be harder to convince. Stigmas of the State Fair being a place for little kids and old people run rampant amongst the teenagers of 2015, but as a fellow member of this generation I can ensure the Fair has fun for everybody.
Rides are fun no matter what age you are, as the Fair accommodates every age group. If you are a teen or the parent of a teen and want to ensure your adult in training isn’t “bored out of their mind” make sure to avoid the Kiddie park rides. These rides are located at the very back of the Fair after the second food court. While not great for teenagers, they offer a great selection for younger kids who are not quite ready for rides such as the Zipper. Photo by Logan Tipton
The Zipper is a great example of a ride that is great for a young adult or even adult, if they feel they can still keep up with the flips and spins of that mechanical beast. The Zipper is located in the main rides section. This section offers some of the more extreme rides, such as the Ex Scream Machine Coaster and the Gravitron 3000. Be warned--if you don’t have the stomach for heights or spinning, these rides are not for you. There are other rides in this section that involve less kinetic energy thrills and more visual input thrills. The Ferris wheel is ideal for a beautiful view, especially at night when the fair comes to life with lights. Photo courtesy CA State Fair
Exhibits are another great option for people of all ages, especially for people who feel they do not have the stomach for the ride section. Each year the State Fair offers new exhibits, and this year they did not disappoint. A full list of the exhibits and activities on display can be found on the California State Fair’s website or discovered by you as you walk from room to room and are greeted by phenomenal surprises.
Minds in Motion was a new exhibit put on display this year, and was aimed towards the young adults visiting the fair. The exhibit includes many stations that are completely interactive. There is a bubble station where you can try your hand at making a huge bubble or even encasing a friend with bubble. After the bubble station is a balancing station where you can stand on a sensor and attempt to hold your balance perfectly while the sensor measures how perfect your balance really is. Other stations in the exhibit include a giant chess board, a pitching tunnel with a speed radar, and a motion powered machine. Photo by Logan Tipton
Tech Trek is a recurring exhibit at the Fair, but this year held many new exciting stations. For the first time ever at the State Fair, visitors can try virtual reality for free. The line is never too long, and the experience is well worth the wait. You are fit with a pair of goggles and stand on a platform that is equipped with a railing. The simulations start and your entire vision is the simulation and as things happen in the simulation the platform below you vibrates in accordance with the events. The virtual reality is not the only cool new station in Tech Trek however, this year Tech Trek brought a replica of the egg nursery from Jurassic park equipped with eggs and controllable claw to rotate and move the eggs with. Something everyone visiting the fair can appreciate is the food. You can find just about any deep fried dessert or bacon wrapped entree, and there is a wide selection of strange delicacies such as chocolate covered bacon and fried rattlesnake. The California State fair is entertainment for people of all ages, whether you are visiting it with family or friends. Without the fair, summer in California would be a lot less special. Check www.castatefair.org for details of everything the fair has to offer this year. The fair is running daily through July 26th. (916) 263-3247. Photo Courtesy Tim Dunn
