Snyder’s Valley Springs Pow Wow Legacy
By Eva Dunn
There is an old saying that goes "God willin’ and
the creek don’t rise, everything will be just fine". Well, it’s May
and I’m pretty sure we are ok on the creeks not overflowing.
Some-times, however, God’s Will leaves us stumped. Earlier this
year, God called his servant John Snyder home. We are comforted
knowing John is with God but our hearts miss him every second.
This was our first time to Snyder’s Valley Springs
Pow Wow held the first weekend in May. After receiving the above
email, we wanted to see this pow wow that John and Betty Snyder had
created on their ranch. We went on May 3, Saturday, joining
hundreds of people browsing over 200 vendor booths under a gorgeous
blue sky. One of the highlights for us was an authentic Chuck
Wagon, with a place for everything while cooking for cowboys on the
trail.
The spirit and atmosphere of Native
American drums and flutes played through the day by local group
Bear Dyken and Jose Cabezas. There were good things to eat, like
the homemade apple pie, the best I have ever tasted. Tim loved the
antique steam engines and we both enjoyed watching the children on
a 'dig' for buried turquoise stones. Overhead flew small airplanes,
dipping and diving, twirling and spinning, flashing in the sun.
There were friendly, interesting people from all over the world,
including neighbors from our own communities. We met Betty Snyder,
a smiling, lovely woman, who bid us "Enjoy your time here", and we
certainly did. Amazing rocks of all sizes and colors, some smooth
and satiny in my hands, with stripes, swirls and hazy colors, I can
see why they become an obsession. Prices were from $1 to over
$31,000. An endless array of rocks, jewelry, clothing, antiques,
hats, and candles satisfied everyone. Yup, we will be there next
year!
